NBA 2017 Latest News & Updates: Omri Casspi Ends Short Stint In New Orleans After Injury
The highlight of the New Orleans-Sacramento Kings deal was DeMarcus Cousins, overshadowing the inclusion of Israeli and shooter Omri Casspi. Both were part of the blockbuster deal, though the 28-year-old Israeli saw the stint cut short following a thumb injury in his first game as a Pelican against the Houston Rockets.
Omri Casspi will miss at least four weeks and the Pelicans apparently not taking any chances. Casspi was waived and the Pelicans are reportedly turning to Reggie Williams instead, ESPN reported. With the move, Casspi may have just kissed his 2016-17 NBA season goodbye. He could still make a return if a team shows interest and takes him in by Apr. 15.
Signing before the NBA postseason wars may be a long shot but the best thing Omri Casspi can look forward to for now. If he is able to heal quickly and return before the NBA playoffs, the upside is that he can re-sign with any team except the Sacramento Kings. Being a known three-point bomber, Casspi could be a good addition for teams in need of outside sniping, Bleacher Report noted.
With Casspi out, Williams gets a chance to prove to the Pelicans what he can do. He was signed to a 10-day contract after spending some time in the NBA Developmental League. Williams averaged 18.3 points and 5.2 rebounds while playing for the Oklahoma City Blue and should have suited up against the Dallas Mavericks.
After the 10-day period, the Pelicans will evaluate to see if Williams should stay or not. If he fails to live to expectations, the Pelicans can opt to sign another player. This will technically be his second 10-day deal. Williams had one earlier in the season but was waived to make room for Donatas Motiejunas. Aside from Williams, other players who were given 10-day deals included Jarrett Jack and Hollis Thompson.
