The movie talks about the life of Loung Ung, who was under Communist party Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The reign of the Communist party has led to the deaths of over two million people from 1975 and 1979.

In an earlier interview with The Guardian, Angelina Jolie said that Maddox helped in the production of the film. He even read the script, helped with the notes, and has attended production meetings.
