Gabourey Sidibe Talks About Her Weight Loss Surgery [VIDEO]
After being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at 33, Gabourey Sidibe chose to secretly undergo a laparoscopic bariatric surgery in May last year to help her weight-loss struggle.
Sidibe, best known for her breakout role in 2009's "Precious" told the People Magazine that the decision to get the procedure done was not about taking the easy way out. Sidibe said she was comfortable with her appearance but worried about her health.
According to the Huffington Post, the actress has struggled with her weight for over a decade before coming up with the decision. After her parents split, Sidibe suffered from depression, anxiety and bulimia which she overcame with therapy.
The New York native shares this in her memoir, "This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare" to be released on May 1st. Sidibe said that she had the weight-loss surgery not because she wanted to be beautiful but because she wanted to change her life and not to worry about the risks of diabetes.
Sidibe further wrote that she wanted to be able to move comfortably and not feel the strain from walking a flight of stairs. The actress also shares on Instagram her mirror selfies which show that there has been a tremendous improvement in her appearance following the surgery.
The "American Horror Story" alum said that the procedure cut her stomach in half to limit both hunger and eating capacity. Doctors said this will change the brain's chemistry. Sidibe wanted to change her eating habits to a more healthier one.
The actress knows that her weight-loss journey did not end with the surgery. Sidibe said she has set weight goals now and is close to hitting it. The Empire star plans to set more until she reaches her ideal weight goal.
Sidibe also works with a nutritionist to help her build healthier eating habits. The actress also started out with a trainer and can be seen swimming and riding a tricycle around the Empire set.
The Precious star appreciates her appearance. Something she had learned long ago. The actress also said she loves her body now.
