A McDonald's restaurant in the Shenyang area of northeastern China has apologized for sending a woman to the hospital because she drank detergent instead of her expected cup of Coca-Cola. The woman suffered from erosive gastritis.

The woman and her boyfriend, identified by media outlets only by his surname Liu, visited the establishment in order to buy meals from McDonald's to go, according to the Want China Times. While there, the woman ordered a Coke. An employee left a cup on the counter filled with detergent. Thinking that it was her order, the woman sipped from the cup.

Immediately afterwards, the woman suffered from a painful sensation in her esophagus and stomach. The couple went to the hospital, where the woman was diagnosed with erosive gastritis and doctors immediately demanded to know what she had drank. When Liu returned to the restaurant for answers, an employee acknowledged that the cup had been set on the counter, but did not offer further explanation.

The incident occurred in mid-January, but Mr. Liu says that she is still receiving treatment in the hospital.

The restaurant has since acknowledged that an employee set the detergent on the counter in a Coca Cola cup. Then Liu likely took the cup, thinking that it was his order, and gave it to his girlfriend.

The restaurant has apologized and offered compensation. The amount has not been disclosed or agreed upon. Liu says that he wants the chain to cover any cost related to healthcare treatments that his girlfriend may need for the issue for the next few years.
