Thieves Steal $3,000 in Donations for 9-Month Old New Heart on Valentine's Day
Police in Orlando, Florida, are searching for criminals who stole $3,000 in cash which was a donation for a 9-month-old girl in desperate need of a heart transplant.
Jaelyn Anderson has been waiting for a heart transplant for nearly four months. She suffers from myocarditis, a life-threatening virus that causes the heart to expand. Her heart is so large that it collapsed her right lung, destroying the muscle tissue inside her chest, her grandfather Rodger Anderson told My Fox Orlando.
"We were just like who could do that?" the baby's mom, Brooke Anderson, told ABC Action News.
Rodger Anderson, who works for JetBlue, got his co-workers to help raise around $10,000 in cash to help the family out with the rising medical bills. While Anderson was in Orlando on Valentine's Day to retrieve $3,000 worth of the donations; he was robbed while eating out at a local restaurant. The thieves made off with his luggage, wallets, and the money.
Jaelyn's mother, Brooke, was forced to quit her job so that her daughter would not be left alone in the hospital. She told ABC Action News said the $3,000 would have gone a long way.
'She brings joy to everybody. She's so sick and she acts like nothing is wrong with her. I am amazed,' Mrs Anderson told 13News.
"It could be tomorrow she gets the heart or a year from now," Anderson said.
The family is now hoping the thieves get a heart and return the money. They say all the donations go a very long way.
