How to Deal With a Boss Who Has Anger Management Issues
We all work with managers and bosses with different approaches. And while some of them are considerate and patient, others are the exact opposite who tend to lash out at the smallest things. So, how do you deal with a boss who has anger management issues?
Why Do Some Managers Get Angry Easily?
In a 2021 survey, it was found that 65 percent of workplace bullies comprised of managers and bosses. With a high number like this, it is easy to assume that they do it and don't even regret it or think about its consequences or effect on their employees.
However, past studies about moral cleansing can explain how managers tend to correct themselves after a burst in the workplace. In most cases, communicating about a situation where a manager suddenly exemplifies anger or rage requires empathy.
Although this communication may not be verbal, practicing empathy will help employees understand why it happened in the first place. Maybe your boss is going through a lot of stress, or they have some personal problems in the family or some medical issues.
Although there is never enough good reason why a person should yell at someone, showing kindness instead of fighting fire with fire might make them realize their mistake.
Other Things to Do
Repeating similar events may not be the best to deal with. In some cases, practicing empathy and kindness won't always solve the problem.
Some other ways to deal with it are remaining objective and focusing on the goal, taking responsibility for your own actions, establishing healthy communication, setting personal boundaries, and proposing a possible solution.
Working with a boss or even a coworker who has anger management issues may not be the easiest, especially if you have to deal with it every day. However, being able to do so will benefit your mental health at the end of the day.
