How to Cope with Unemployment
Losing a job is not an easy thing to go through. If it is your only source of income, it puts tremendous stress over not knowing how you will get by for the next weeks or months. It takes away the feeling of security and safety.
Because of that, it can get traumatic for some people, explained Kenya Crawford, a licensed psychotherapist and racial equity consultant. In the United States, about 40 percent of the workforce reported to have been laid off at least once.
How to Cope with Unemployment
Getting laid off is not easy. So, here are some tips for coping with unemployment.
Create a Routine That Feels Good to You
Creating a routine does not have to be complicated. You can start by listing the activities and tasks you need to do and when you want them done. It can include anything from your physical fitness goals to job hunting and errands.
Go about your day as usual, like having your morning coffee and having lunch on time while completing your listed tasks. That will give you a sense of accomplishment without drowning yourself in job applications.
Be Physically Active
Being physically active not only keeps you healthy but also helps you improve your mental health. While on a career break, you can revisit some fitness goals you had before that you were too busy to accomplish or maybe create new goals that will help you keep moving just as you did when you were employed. It will give your body satisfaction that you are doing something during the day.
Look at the Positive Outcome
It may be difficult but try to think about the positive side of things. Maybe you are leaving a toxic work environment or finally giving yourself a break from burnout. Take this as an opportunity to change things for something that will meet your needs.
