Traveling the world is probably on everyone's bucket list. However, not everyone gets excited to board a plane. In fact, for some people, this might be the most boring part of the trip. But some have a more serious reason than boredom not to fly. One of the most common phobias that a lot of people have is the fear of flying or aviophobia.

Aviophobia, sometimes called aerophobia, is the term used to describe the intense fear of flying. While its cause differs for every individual, the effects are similar. A lot of people with aviophobia experience shivering, increased heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, confusion and irritation. Having all of these while you are at least 35,000 feet up in the air can be overwhelming. So how do you overcome your fear of flying? Here are a few ways.

1. Learn what triggers your fear

Solving any issue starts with identifying the root of the problem. In the case of overcoming fears like this one, identifying what triggers your fear of flying will help determine an appropriate solution.

2. Plan your trip ahead of time

Planning a trip does not only include what hotel to stay or which tours to take and places to visit; it also involves selecting a flight that reduces your chances of having anxiety during the flight. For example, opting for a non-stop flight lets you experience it once, but it takes longer than connecting flights. Identifying these factors will help you make a better decision.

3. Look into treatment and medication

When this fear becomes unmanageable even with prolonged exposure and proper anxiety management, it may be time to see a doctor. Depending on the severity of your phobia, treatment methods may include talk therapy and exposure therapy. Your doctor might also prescribe some anxiety medication.
