Kleptomania is a rare type of impulse control disorder that results in the uncontrollable urge to steal something that typically has little value to them. It can start in childhood, and if not treated or managed, it can continue into adulthood. Since it is an uncontrollable behavior, reprimanding your child can only be helpful to an extent. They will most likely still have the urge to do it again. Here are a few ways to manage their condition.

Identify the triggers and plan ahead

In some cases, it can be due to irregular levels of serotonin and dopamine. For others, it may stem from a history of mental illness and addictive behaviors in the family, or it may be a trauma response due to an experience.

While there are still questions about the disorder, identifying the reason why your child is exhibiting symptoms of kleptomania will help you come up with a plan in case they feel the urge to steal something. Remember that they do not plan these actions, but they can be taught to manage them.

Keep them physically fit

Exercise, proper nutrition and proper sleep hygiene help boost serotonin levels, keeping the symptoms of kleptomania at bay. Teaching your child about physical fitness can be a habit that they develop so that they do not bring the behavior with them as they grow up. 

Therapy and medication

A study from 2022 found that cognitive behavior therapy or CBT is an effective treatment method for kleptomania. It was also proven to improve the quality of life of the participants. Depending on the advice of a professional, some medications like antidepressants and those used in addiction treatment can be used. as well.
