Being an Extroverted Introvert: Why Some People Energize You While Others Drain You

Sometimes, you meet people who give out positive vibes ,and they just have a way of effortlessly making you feel energized. But others leave you exhausted after spending time with them for even just an hour, let alone a day. Don't worry, it's not just in your head, but why does it happen?

Emotional and physical effects of relational energy

In 2016, researchers looked into how relational energy affects the way a person interacts with others. It was found that positive interactions naturally elevate enthusiasm while negative ones drain energy. Therefore, people who exhibit empathy, support and optimism naturally energize others, while those who lack empathy, are self-centered and pessimistic naturally drain others.

Positive relational energy also positively affects physical health. In a study from 2008, emotionally energizing social interactions were seen to improve cardiovascular health, as well as the immune and neuroendocrine systems, resulting in increased life expectancy.

Selective relationships

The principle of relational energy is connected to the selective behavior of extroverted introverts when it comes to relationships. Because they tend to prioritize quality over quantity and seek more meaningful connections, they strongly acknowledge the impact of relational energy on their overall vitality. In personal situations, they tend to get drained by narcissistic behaviors, and in the workplace, a demanding micromanager leaves them emotionally exhausted.

A balancing act

Extroverted introverts possess the traits of both extroversion and introversion. Their extroverted side gets a boost from positive relational energy, and this makes them more sociable and energized in interactions.

However, they do not enjoy socializing all the time. Their introverted side gets emotionally depleted, and they feel exhausted from social events where they find themselves interacting with people who have negative relational energy. These draining interactions have an apparent effect on them.
