Smartwatch: The Positive and Negative Effects of Using Wearable Technology

The smartwatch is made for physical health monitoring and improvement. And like any other technological advancement, it comes with advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of them.

Nutrition and diet tracking

Proper nutrition and diet are two of the most important things when it comes to physical fitness and health. Depending on the goal you have, smartwatches provide a way for you to track what you eat or even make sure you are sticking to your meal plans. As such, the wearable device can help you stay focused on your nutrition and dietary goals.

On the downside, smartwatches tend to focus on calorie counts. Of course, this is a good thing. But for people who have a difficult relationship with food, like those who have eating disorders, this can cause distress. A study showed that adults who used calorie-counting apps to control their weight and body shape were more likely to experience various eating disorder symptoms than those who used them for health improvement.

Workout reminders

Aside from tracking physical data, smartwatches provide motivational workout reminders. This is particularly helpful for people training to join a marathon or any competition. Some features even help track where and how far you've run or biked. You can even use it as a guide through apps that offer instructional videos to help you work out.

However, some people find the constant reminders distracting and stressful. And because it is essentially an extension of the smartphone, receiving constant notifications on the smartwatch can be distracting. These notifications can cause guilt and even lower the self-esteem of those who fail to meet their workout goals.
