Ways to Support a Friend Going Through Physical Therapy

Getting in an accident can be a traumatic experience, but what some people forget is the struggle during recovery. If you have a friend or a loved one going through physical therapy, remember that it is not a painless experience.

Especially when a person is used to being physically active, therapy can have negative effects on a person's mental health. This is why they need a strong support system. Here's how you can be there in this trying time.

Set realistic goals

Depending on the severity of an injury, physical therapy can extend from a few days to over a year. Setting goals motivates the patient to work on themselves, and achieving them brings satisfaction. Remember not to set goals for them, but only help them establish them. This lets them know that they are in control of their health.

Be patient

It is normal for patients undergoing physical therapy to quickly change their mood daily. Expect ups and downs, even if before having an accident, you saw them as an emotionally stable individual. It can be frustrating for them to have to rely on someone else all the time, so they may even lash out at you, but understanding the situation from their point of view can help manage such circumstances.

Offer help, but don't do everything for them

Vice president of rehabilitative services for VNA Healthtrends Jay Neidich explains that doing everything for a person undergoing physical therapy may only demotivate them. Offer some help to let them know you are there for them, but do not take over the tasks they want to do themselves.
