How to Overcome Erotomania
The popular Netflix series "You" is about Joe Goldberg, the main character who stalks women he believes are in love with him. He uncontrollably becomes obsessed with them to the point that he ends up murdering them. But can such a person exist in real life? The quick answer: yes.
Erotomania is a psychological condition where a person is overpowered by the unfounded and unrealistic belief that another person is in love with them. They also develop fantasies and other extremely obsessive behaviors toward that person.
Erotomania is a medical condition that requires treatment, and it is different from the typical feeling of infatuation. A person who is simply infatuated is aware to some degree that their feelings are not reciprocated. Everyone experiences infatuation, but unlike erotomania, it does not result in harmful behavior to themselves or others.
Because of the obsessive nature of this disorder, it can be dangerous when it gets out of hand. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome erotomania. Here are some of them.
Medication
Psychotherapy requires acceptance of a condition or mental health illness. But because of the delusional nature of erotomania, treatment can be challenging. This is why the first step of treatment often involves the use of medication like antipsychotics to help manage the patient's delusions. However, medication alone is not enough, so it is often coupled with psychotherapy.
Cognitive behavior therapy
Cognitive behavior therapy or CBT is a common method of psychotherapy used by experts in treating various mental health issues. With the help of a professional, CBT can help address any underlying causes to prevent any delusions that can lead to erotomania.
Additionally, family therapy can be helpful not only to the patient but also to their family members. In any kind of mental illness, a strong support system is needed.
