Strawberries Found to Improve Mood in Overweight Adults
A recent study conducted on middle-aged individuals who were overweight and with insulin resistance unveiled intriguing findings regarding the impact of strawberry consumption on cognitive function and mood.
For the study, researchers focused on the influence of strawberries on memory interference and depression.
Examining cognitive disorders' gradual onset, particularly Alzheimer's disease, the researchers investigated dietary interventions that might impede dementia progression and enhance emotional well-being. Anthocyanins, present in strawberries, became the focal point of this exploration. In previous studies, blueberries, also containing anthocyanins, hinted at improved executive brain function, propelling the current investigation.
The study revealed a reduction of intrusion errors and a decline in reported depression among participants who consumed strawberries, indicating potential cognitive and emotional benefits associated with strawberry intake.
Other potential benefits
In a report, nutritionist Michelle Routhenstein highlighted the rich anthocyanin content in strawberries, attributing their potential benefits to cognitive and emotional health to these compounds' anti-neuroinflammatory properties. She also noted similar anthocyanin-rich fruits, such as blueberries, blackberries, and mulberries, offering comparable advantages.
Routhenstein emphasized the year-round availability of frozen strawberries, assuring their nutritional equivalence to fresh ones. However, she advised cautious thawing methods to preserve vitamin C content.
It's not just the fruit
Strawberries are beneficial to a person's health, but this may not only mean the fruit. In an older study, researchers found that observing strawberry plants led to decreased heart rate and cortisol levels. It also reduced negative mood indicators and anxiety levels. Additionally, cognition, measured by reaction time, showed improvement after interacting with the plants. A longer-term experiment in a simulated isolated environment showed similar trends in enhancing mood states among crew members, although not statistically significant.
Overall, the study provided experimental evidence supporting the potential benefits of engaging with strawberry plants in isolated environments, suggesting their positive influence on mental well-being and cognitive function.
