Universally, singing fosters unity and cohesion. Throughout human evolution, singing has triggered the release of endorphins, fostering contentment and communal bonding.

University of Oxford professor Robin Dunbar has explained that communal singing, with its synchrony, creates a remarkable endorphin surge, resulting in profound connections among strangers akin to lifelong friendships. These were the findings in the study conducted by Dunbar and his colleagues in 2015.

This may be attributed to the prolonged exhalation in singing activates endorphin release, amplified in choirs or carol concerts due to vocal synchrony. This bonding mechanism scales with group size, unlike any other known process.

Singing and mental health

Singing's benefits extend to mental health, aiding emotional regulation and fostering a sense of identity. In a study conducted by University College London professor Daisy Fancourt, it was found that singing serves as an outlet, redirecting focus from life's challenges and enhancing coping mechanisms.

This collective impact translates into higher well-being and life satisfaction for those engaged in singing. Moreover, singing therapies show promise, especially in conditions like dementia and Parkinson's disease, offering connections and potential cognitive and physical improvements.

Singing and physical health

Singing also has several physical benefits, from reducing stress hormones to enhancing lung health. Singing is a powerful emotional outlet that connects us deeply to ourselves and others. Music therapist Lisa Townsend explains how singing matches emotions, triggers endorphins, and fosters mindfulness.

Additionally, in yet another study, researchers found that singing could restore some cognitive functions. Sixty adult participants who sang in a choir were found to have higher verbal functioning than those who refrained from the activity.
