What is the DASH Diet?
The DASH diet, short for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, is a dietary plan primarily designed to reduce high blood pressure. It underscores the need to consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and limited amounts of saturated fats, sodium and added sugars. This approach aims to promote heart health by improving blood pressure levels and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

In theory, the antioxidants abundant in fruits and vegetables act as defenders against oxidative stress, which can harm brain cells. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and nuts, are crucial for brain development and functioning. They help maintain proper neural connections and aid neurotransmitter function, influencing mood and cognition.
In a study from 2021, researchers found associations between the DASH diet and reduced stress and difficulty falling asleep.
In a more recent study, researchers extensively examined 16 studies from May to July 2021, focusing on the DASH diet's impact on mental health. These studies, including observational and randomized trials, varied in size and methodology.
While no direct link to clinically diagnosed depression was established, some correlations were noted. Medium adherence to the DASH diet showed lower risks of depression. Emotional symptoms in children improved with the DASH diet, and quality of life outcomes varied. Despite inconsistencies, evidence suggests the DASH diet may positively affect mental well-being.
