In 2017, HBO's documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest" looked into the gripping case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee.

Gypsy, previously portrayed as sick due to her mother's manipulation, confessed to Dee Dee's murder. Under Dee Dee's influence, Gypsy believed she suffered from various illnesses despite being healthy. Gypsy and her online boyfriend faced murder charges after Dee Dee was found stabbed in 2015. This tragic and bizarre story inspired Hulu's series "The Act," highlighting the unsettling tale of deception and tragedy that unfolded within their family.

Psychiatrist Marc Feldman says that Dee Dee most likely had Munchausen by proxy disorder, now called factitious disorder imposed on another or FDIA, is a rare form of abuse that involves a caregiver inducing illness or fabricating symptoms in someone under their care. This condition gained attention due to its deceptive and harmful nature. Here, the caregiver, often a parent, seeks attention or sympathy by presenting the victim, commonly a child, as ill or impaired.

Symptoms of Munchausen by Proxy Disorder

Individuals with FDIA exhibit an array of behaviors, including falsifying medical histories, tampering with diagnostic tests, and even inducing symptoms through medication or other means. They might exaggerate or invent symptoms, leading to unnecessary medical procedures or treatments. This behavior persists despite negative consequences and interventions.

Impact on victims

Victims of MBP endure significant physical and emotional trauma. Misdiagnosis, unnecessary medical interventions and isolation from peers are common. Additionally, victims often face challenges in trusting others and may struggle with their identity and health perceptions.

Identifying MBP can be challenging due to its complex and covert nature. Medical professionals and authorities must carefully navigate suspicions while ensuring the safety of the victim and offering support to the caregiver, who may also need mental health assistance.
