How to Deepen Friendly Relationships

Friends provide emotional support, reduce stress, and boost happiness. Friendships promote a sense of belonging, improve self-esteem, and offer opportunities for personal growth. Friendly relationships also benefit people on a deeper psychological level. In a study, high-quality friendships were found to predict well-being and longevity.

Quality friendships can also improve a person's physical health. In another study, high-quality social connections were linked to lower blood pressure, lower BMI, less inflammation and a reduced risk of diabetes across all age groups.

However, it is important to note that these physical and psychological advantages are only present in high-quality relationships. Here's how to deepen friendly relationships.

Schedule time to spend with them

While spontaneous experiences are fund, creating a schedule for spending quality time with friends is vital. According to a study, consistent interaction helps solidify bonds. Given each person has their own life and responsibilities, scheduling time to be with friends does not have to be elaborate as well -- setting aside a weekly dinner, a monthly hike, or even a quick catch-up call can strengthen friendships over time. The key is regularity.

Be present in the moment

When spending time together, being present is crucial. Minimize distractions -- put away phones or turn off notifications -- to show genuine interest in what your friend is saying. Phones can be distracting, and studies have shown that simply having a phone in sight during a conversation can hurt the connection between two people. Active listening, making eye contact, and engaging in the conversation enhance the connection.

Hang out after hanging out

Deepening friendships does not have to end when the hang-out does. Following up on shared experiences reinforces the connection. Sending a follow-up message about an inside joke from your time together or planning the next meet-up keeps the bond alive beyond the initial interaction. These gestures demonstrate investment and care in the relationship.
