Physical activity is known for its positive impact on mental health, but exercising in natural environments, often termed "green exercise," magnifies these benefits.

According to a recent study, green and blue spaces, such as parks and bodies of water, reduce stress, boost mood, enhance relaxation, promote mental clarity, and improve overall mental well-being through natural immersion. In a review, researchers emphasized the link between physical activity, various environments, and health. They discussed declining activity levels, outdoor exercise benefits, changing nature connections, and the potential for nature-based solutions in health promotion.

Walking, running, or hiking

Walking, running, jogging, or hiking amidst natural landscapes such as parks, forests, or trails offers more than just physical exercise. Spending time in green spaces while engaging in these activities can alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. The exposure to nature reduces rumination, allowing the mind to rest and recover.

Cycling

Cycling along countryside paths, mountain trails, or scenic routes not only provides a cardiovascular workout but also enhances mental health. Being surrounded by natural beauty during cycling exercises has been linked to reduced levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. Additionally, the sense of freedom and exploration inherent in cycling outdoors contributes to improved mood and overall well-being.

Swimming

Immersing oneself in natural bodies of water like lakes, rivers, or the ocean offers a unique form of green exercise. Swimming in these environments not only provides physical benefits but also promotes mental relaxation and rejuvenation. Studies suggest that activities involving water can have calming effects, reducing symptoms of anxiety and promoting a sense of tranquility.

Gardening

Engaging in gardening activities, such as planting, weeding, or tending to plants, is a form of physical exercise that connects individuals with nature. The act of nurturing plants has been associated with reduced stress levels and improved mood. Additionally, spending time outdoors in gardens or green spaces contributes to a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, further boosting mental well-being.
