Using Gestalt Therapy to Improve Personal Awareness

Personal awareness, the understanding of oneself and the environment, is an essential part of emotional and psychological well-being.

One approach that helps in enhancing this awareness is gestalt therapy. This therapeutic framework employs a holistic view of human experience, emphasizing the present moment and aims at improving self-awareness through various techniques.

Gestalt therapy revolves around the concept of wholeness. It focuses on the present moment, the "here and now," rather than dwelling on past experiences or speculating about the future. Through this type of therapy, experts believe individuals can resolve their issues by becoming more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The therapist aids this process by guiding individuals to recognize patterns, habits, and unfinished business that affect their present lives.

Here are some of the techniques that therapists use to improve personal awareness.

The empty chair

A hallmark technique in gestalt therapy is the empty chair exercise. Here, individuals engage in a dialogue between different aspects of themselves or with someone significant. By physically switching chairs and taking on different roles, they explore conflicting emotions or unresolved issues. This technique allows them to confront suppressed feelings, facilitating a deeper understanding of inner conflicts.

Body language and exaggeration

Gestalt therapists pay close attention to body language and encourage individuals to exaggerate movements or expressions associated with their emotions. By amplifying gestures or postures, individuals can better recognize and understand their underlying feelings. For instance, a person feeling restricted might physically demonstrate a tightness in their body, aiding in the acknowledgment and release of that tension.

Creative arts

Another effective aspect of Gestalt therapy involves integrating creative arts like painting, sculpting, or role-playing. Engaging in these activities allows individuals to express emotions that might be difficult to articulate verbally. This creative exploration often provides insights into subconscious thoughts and feelings, fostering a deeper self-awareness.
