Are Vision Boards Really Effective?

While vision boards may seem like a simple collage of images and words, some people swear by their effectiveness.

It is mostly up to an individual and their efforts to reach their goals, but that does not mean they cannot rely on inspirational tools like vision boards. There is some science behind these simple expressions of a person's dreams.

By repetitively exposing desire, vision boards program the reticular activating system or RAS -- a network of neurons in the brainstem -- to prioritize relevant stimuli. This collaboration enhances attention, primes goals, and leverages emotional engagement, offering a neurological framework for the efficacy of vision boards in shaping perceptions and steering actions.

Value tagging

One key aspect of vision boards is the process of value tagging. When individuals select images and words to represent their goals and aspirations, they are essentially attaching value to these concepts. This association of positive feelings with the depicted goals can enhance motivation and persistence toward achieving them.

In a report, Neuroscientist Dr Tara Swart explained that the brain's value-tagging process prioritizes images over words, imprinting them into the subconscious and filtering irrelevant information. Regularly viewing these images elevates their importance, especially when done before sleep.

Goal priming

The constant exposure to visual representations of desired outcomes can prime the brain to focus on relevant stimuli in the environment. In a study, health goal priming was seen to influence attention and decision-making, converting their motivation into regular behavior.

This process potentially makes individuals more attuned to opportunities aligned with their goals. Therefore, vision boards may serve as a constant reminder, helping individuals stay focused on their objectives.

Emotional response

The emotional response triggered by vision boards is another factor contributing to their potential effectiveness. As individuals engage emotionally with the images and words on their vision boards, it can create a positive feedback loop, reinforcing the individual's commitment to their goals.
