Today, anxiety is a prevalent issue as it significantly impacts a lot of people's well-being. In addition to conventional treatments like medication and therapy, yoga offers a holistic approach that may provide relief to people with anxiety.

Yoga combines the effects of breath, meditation and various poses for physical and mental benefits. Studies suggest it helps relieve stress, improve sleep, and boost self-esteem. With a lot of poses available, which ones are the best for anxiety?

Seated forward bend

This pose involves a gentle forward fold, promoting relaxation and soothing the nervous system. The controlled stretching mechanism activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the "rest and digest" response. This counteracts the hyperactivity associated with anxiety, inducing a sense of calm.

Extended puppy

The extended puppy pose, a mild inversion, is another powerful tool in anxiety management. This pose involves lowering the chest towards the ground while keeping the hips elevated. Inverted poses like this one stimulate blood flow from the legs and pelvis to the heart, which sends it to the lungs for healthy oxygenation.

Supine spinal twist

The supine spinal twist involves lying on the back and gently twisting the spine, releasing tension in the back and shoulders. This twist enhances blood circulation, which then ensures a better supply of oxygen to the brain, positively impacting cognitive function and reducing anxiety symptoms.

Cat and cow

The cat and cow poses, often performed together, offer a dynamic sequence beneficial for anxiety sufferers. By alternately arching and rounding the back, this rhythmic movement massages the spine, promoting flexibility and relieving tension. This sequence enhances body awareness and redirects focus away from anxious thoughts.

Legs up the wall

Like the extended puppy, the legs-up-the-wall pose is a restorative inversion that facilitates venous return, aiding blood circulation and reducing inflammation. Improved circulation not only supports physical well-being but also positively influences mental clarity and emotional stability.
