The Alarming Effect of PCOS on Women’s Mental Health
In a TikTok video, OB-GYN Dr. Franziska Haydanek, more popularly known as Dr. Fran, talked about a study showing a higher risk of suicide for women diagnosed with PCOS, suggesting that the disorder affects women not only physically but also mentally.
The study showed that this risk of suicide was about 8.5 times higher in women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS when compared with the control group. Dr. Fran explains in the video that this is likely due to several factors, including a person's frustration towards their body, the infertility that PCOS can cause and the health concerns that come with the diagnosis.
Other effects of PCOS on mental health
Dr. Sophie Williams, a psychologist at the University of Derby who specializes in researching PCOS and its connection to mental health, explained in a report that women with PCOS often experience depression and anxiety, but the exact causes are still uncertain.
Research suggests a potential biological component influencing these mental health issues. But despite existing efforts, there is a need for more recognition of and further research on the impact of PCOS on mental health.
Dr. Williams encouraged those struggling with PCOS-related mental health issues to seek professional help. Treatment options include medications to manage hormone levels, insulin regulation, and mental health support through the NHS, although waiting lists are lengthy. Despite the challenges, there's hope for managing PCOS symptoms and improving mental well-being with proper support and treatment.
