Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health conditions globally, affecting millions of individuals. Besides various treatments, exercise plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of mental health issues.

In a comprehensive review, researchers examined the impact of physical activity on adult mental health, analyzing over 1,000 trials with 128,000 participants. They found that all forms of exercise are effective in improving mental well-being.

One of the researchers, Ben Singh, highlighted the effectiveness of physical activity in treating depression and anxiety, emphasizing its superiority over conventional therapies and medications. Additionally, regular exercise was found to reduce the likelihood of developing mental health conditions.

The social and achievement-oriented aspects of exercise contribute to its protective effect against anxiety and depression. Exercise also induces structural and biological changes in the brain, such as reducing inflammation and promoting neuron growth.

The researchers found that both high and low-intensity activities, from cardio to mind-body exercises like yoga, yield mental health benefits. Even minimal physical activity provides advantages, emphasizing the accessibility of exercise as a mental health intervention.

The link between exercise and mental health

Even before this review, past studies have consistently shown a positive correlation between regular exercise and improved mental health outcomes. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters known to alleviate stress and enhance mood. Exercise also promotes the growth of new brain cells in regions associated with emotion regulation, such as the hippocampus.

Reducing symptoms of anxiety

Engaging in physical activity can effectively reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. Exercise helps individuals manage stress by providing a healthy outlet for pent-up energy and tension. The repetitive nature of activities like running or swimming can induce a meditative state, calming the mind and reducing anxious thoughts.

Preventing depression

Similarly, exercise shows promise in preventing depression. Studies have demonstrated that individuals who maintain an active lifestyle are less likely to develop depressive symptoms. Regular exercise creates a sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy, which can counteract feelings of hopelessness and low self-esteem associated with depression.
