Neuralink First Patient Able to Move Computer Mouse Using Brain

By Dynne C. | Update Date: Feb 26, 2024 10:22 PM EST

Earlier this year, Elon Musk's brain implant company Neuralink announced that a participant had successfully received the company's first brain implant. Now, Neuralink has again divulged another breakthrough after the participant was able to control a computer mouse with their mind.

Neuralink's device, featuring 1,024 electrodes, penetrates the brain to record individual neuron activity, a step beyond surface-level brain-computer interfaces or BCIs. Despite the innovation, concerns linger regarding the secrecy surrounding the device's safety and performance. Neurosurgeon Sameer Sheth claims that the company is sharing only what they want people to know.

Despite the breakthrough, some researchers argue that this capability is not novel. Some previous BCIs have allowed cursor control, with some implanted systems enabling even a "left click" function. The real test lies in achieving Musk's grand vision of enabling individuals living with paralysis, similar to Stephen Hawking's condition, to communicate rapidly.

Prioritizing Safety

With the excitement over Neuralink's progress, researchers still emphasized the importance of safety regarding the device itself and the surgical procedures involved. Amid Neuralink's advancements, there remains a lack of detailed information regarding the safety protocols and surgical techniques utilized. This raises concerns within the scientific community, which has stressed the need for transparency to ensure ethical and safe implementation.

Progress and future directions

Despite these reservations, experts acknowledge the significance of Neuralink's progress in advancing the field of BCIs. The proliferation of companies working in this area is seen as a positive development, likely to accelerate innovation and drive the field forward. However, balance must be maintained between rapid progress and ensuring safety and ethical considerations are upheld.
