Poll Shows Many Americans Benefit Mentally From Having Pets
People who have pets at home may have better mental health than those who don't, according to a survey.
A recent poll with over 2,200 adult participants in the United States showed that a significant majority (84%) believe their pets positively impact their mental health. They viewed their animal companions as true friends, providing unconditional love and support, according to about two-thirds of the respondents.
American Psychiatric Association president Dr. Petros Levounis emphasized the therapeutic role pets play in mental health, recommending pet adoption to patients struggling with addiction or psychiatric disorders. About 18% of pet owners stated that their pets were their certified emotional support animals.
Additional findings from the poll showed many valued their pets for their calming presence, stress-reducing abilities, encouragement for physical activity and ability to bring structure to daily routines. They also recognized their pets for enhancing their social lives.
American Veterinary Medical Association president Dr. Rena Carlson highlighted the bond between people and their pets due to the emotional support they offer. Despite the positive impacts, concerns about pet health and mortality are prevalent among owners, with 76% worrying about their pets passing away and 67% expressing health concerns. Per the poll, dogs were the most common pets, followed by cats, fish, birds and other animals.
Pets and mental health
Having pets offers numerous mental health benefits. Interacting with pets, like stroking a cat or playing with a dog, can lower stress levels. Their companionship combats loneliness and provides unconditional love, reducing feelings of isolation. Daily routines for caring, feeding and exercising pets instill structure, which is beneficial to those with depression.
Pet ownership also promotes social connections. They can act as a conversation starter, which eases social anxiety. They also create a sense of purpose and responsibility, enhancing overall well-being. Spending time with pets promotes mindfulness and relaxation. Their presence boosts mood, evoking happiness and laughter and can reduce symptoms of depression, according to experts.
