In Taiwan, more and more individuals struggle with severe mental illness. This also affects people's physical health, prompting schools to use a more proactive approach.

A recent study involving over 19,000 individuals with severe mental illness or SMI showed significantly higher risks, particularly among those with serious illnesses. These individuals also utilized healthcare services more frequently. Patients with a history of hospitalization or emergency department visits also had heightened risks.

Mental health days for students

The implementation of mental health days for students in Taiwan is a proactive step toward addressing the rising mental health issues, stress levels and suicide rates among youth. This initiative allows high school students to take up to three days off per semester without the need for a doctor's note, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of mental well-being.

The prevalence of mental health issues among Taiwanese students is concerning, with stress, depression and anxiety being significant contributors. The high suicide rates and increasing cases of severe stress and depression highlight the urgency for interventions to support mental health.

The introduction of mental health leave in schools and universities has already shown promising results. Reports suggest that students who have utilized these leave days have found relief from stress and have been able to address their mental health concerns effectively.

By normalizing the concept of mental health days, Taiwan aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and encourage students to seek help when needed. This initiative could improve societal attitudes toward mental health issues and promote a culture of support and understanding.

While mental health challenges among students are not unique to Taiwan, this proactive approach sets a precedent for other countries to consider similar measures to support the well-being of their youth populations. The global prevalence of mental health disorders among adolescents emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies to address these issues effectively.
