Study Finds 'Strong' Evidence Supplements Prevent Memory Loss
Researchers have uncovered compelling evidence supporting the use of multivitamins to stave off memory decline and slow the aging process.
The findings come from the COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study (COSMOS), a large-scale investigation led by Mass General Brigham researchers.
The study, which rigorously tested cocoa extract and multivitamin supplements, yielded promising results for daily multivitamin use.
Previous analyses hinted at cognitive benefits, and this third phase, involving in-person assessments, further solidified these findings.
Cognitive assessments
The study highlights the consistent and statistically significant advantages of daily multivitamin consumption. In a report, lead author Chirag Vyas emphasized the potential of multivitamins to combat cognitive decline, a pressing concern among older adults.
Detailed cognitive assessments were conducted among 573 participants, revealing a modest yet significant improvement in global cognition over two years. Notably, multivitamin supplementation showed a clear benefit in episodic memory but not in executive function/attention.
A meta-analysis combining data from all three studies confirmed robust benefits for both global cognition and episodic memory. The authors estimate that daily multivitamin intake can delay cognitive aging by up to two years compared to a placebo.
Research-based outlook
Senior author Olivia Okereke stressed the importance of these findings for older adults seeking to preserve brain health. Co-author JoAnn Manson agreed with this statement, highlighting the accessibility and affordability of multivitamins in supporting cognitive health.
The collective evidence from COSMOS suggests that a daily multivitamin, rich in essential micronutrients, holds immense potential in averting memory loss and cognitive decline. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and optimize cognitive health strategies for aging populations.
