What Is Palming?

Today's busy lifestyle has made stress an involuntary companion for many. Staring at screens for prolonged periods and constant exposure to artificial lighting can lead to eye strain, discomfort and even headaches. Fortunately, simple techniques like palming can offer relief.

Palming is a fundamental practice in the Bates method, named after Dr. William Bates, an ophthalmologist who believed in the body's natural ability to heal itself. The Bates method is a holistic approach to vision improvement that emphasizes relaxation and natural vision habits. Palming, one of the techniques in the Bates method, is primarily designed to soothe tired eyes. However, it is also used to promote relaxation and relieve stress.

Muscle relaxation

Palming involves covering the eyes with the palms of the hands in a way that blocks out all light. By creating this total darkness, the eyes can rest and relax deeply. The warmth from the hands helps to ease tension around the eyes and forehead, promoting muscle relaxation. As the muscles in the eyes and face unwind, circulation improves, and the eyes are nourished with fresh blood and oxygen.

Relief from eye strain

One of the primary benefits of palming is its ability to alleviate eye strain. Whether from staring at screens, reading for extended periods, or exposure to harsh lighting, our eyes often become fatigued. Palming offers a moment of respite, allowing the eyes to recover from the strain of modern living. It is a simple yet powerful tool that can be easily incorporated into daily routines, providing much-needed relief whenever it's needed.

Mindfulness

Aside from the physical benefits, palming also serves as a form of mindfulness practice. As a person engage in palming, they are encouraged to focus on their breath and the sensation of warmth against their eyelids. This mindfulness component helps to quiet the mind and reduce overall stress levels, promoting calmness and relaxation.
