Fun Ways to Teach Mindfulness to Children

Teaching children mindfulness can equip them with valuable life skills to manage stress and emotions. Engaging activities can make learning mindfulness enjoyable and accessible. Here are some fun ways to introduce mindfulness to children.

Mindful posing

Mindful posing involves simple yoga poses combined with mindful breathing. Children can imitate fictional characters, animals, or objects while focusing on their breath. For example, they can pretend to be Superman while focusing on posture and breathing, or trees swaying in the wind, feeling their feet rooted to the ground as they inhale and exhale slowly. This activity encourages body awareness and relaxation.

Spidey senses

Spidey Senses is a game that heightens children's awareness of their surroundings. They can close their eyes and listen carefully, identifying different sounds around them. Encourage them to notice the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, or distant traffic noise. This activity enhances sensory perception and promotes present-moment awareness.

The mindful jar

The mindful jar is a visual aid that helps children understand the concept of calming the mind. Fill a jar with water and glitter, then seal it tightly. As children shake the jar, they observe how the glitter swirls and settles slowly. This represents how our thoughts and emotions can become chaotic but eventually settle with mindfulness practice. It is a tangible way for children to visualize the calming effect of mindfulness.

Safari exercise

The safari exercise is a guided imagination activity that encourages children to explore their inner world. Invite them to imagine embarking on a safari adventure in their minds. Encourage them to notice their thoughts and feelings as they encounter different "animals" representing emotions. They can learn to observe their emotions without judgment, fostering emotional intelligence and resilience.
