Home Clutter Takes a Toll on Mental Health, Survey Finds
Maintaining an organized home appears to be a constant struggle for many, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll for The Container Store.
The study, comprising 2,000 homeowners with garages, aimed to gauge the intricate relationship between clutter and mental health.
The findings showed that 82% of the respondents, who self-identified as organized individuals, struggled with the mental effects of domestic disorder, EMS 1 reported.
Nearly half of the participants (48%) said that the state of their homes significantly impacted their psychological well-being, suggesting a profound link between the external environment and internal balance.
Moreover, the survey highlighted the pervasive nature of clutter-induced stress, with 73% expressing feelings of being overwhelmed when confronted with untidiness.
Despite efforts to combat disarray, manifested in the enjoyment of organizing reported by 35% of respondents, a notable segment (24%) grappled with antipathy toward decluttering activities.
Key storage areas such as garages, closets and drawers were deemed the points of chaos, with 46% citing the garage as the most challenging space to maintain.
Notably, the top culprits contributing to clutter included home and holiday decor (41%), old documents (34%) and clothes or shoes (29%), causing feelings of embarrassment among 46% of homeowners who fear judgment over the state of their homes.
Addressing these challenges, Gretchen Ganc, executive vice president of strategy and analytics at The Container Store, recommended personalized organizational solutions tailored to individual needs.
She stressed the transformative potential inherent within neglected spaces, urging homeowners to leverage innovative storage solutions to curtail clutter-induced stress.
Despite the utility of garages as storage hubs for essential and miscellaneous items, structural limitations often thwart optimal organization, with 43% of respondents complaining about the inadequacy of their garage storage systems.
Ganc advised homeowners to go for bespoke furniture pieces from trusted providers to optimize spatial efficiency and restore harmony within garages.
