Today, technology is an important part of daily life, which is why experts put effort into integrating it in various fields.

For example, in psychotherapy, virtual reality offers immersive exposure therapy and safe environments for trauma processing with customizable scenarios for cognitive restructuring.

In an interview, Dr. Kim Bullock shared her thoughts on how VR devices such as the Apple Vision Pro can help improve mental healthcare.

Bullock, a triple board-certified in psychiatry, neurology and lifestyle medicine, has been pioneering the integration of virtual reality (VR) into psychiatric care. At Stanford University, she established the Virtual Reality and Immersive Technology Clinic to augment evidence-based psychotherapy. VR offers a versatile toolset, facilitating the teaching of relaxation techniques, mindfulness and desensitization therapies.

The potential of Apple Vision Pro

With Apple's unveiling of the Augmented Reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, the landscape of mental health treatment stands on the brink of transformation. Bullock sees this development as a potential game-changer, especially given the spatial computing capabilities and integration with large language models.

However, she notes that widespread adoption may be hindered by factors such as cost and acceptance within the healthcare system.

Despite the promise of devices like the Apple Vision Pro, Bullock raises important concerns about the rapid deployment of mental health applications without adequate testing. Citing a spatial computing program developed by Cedars Sinai called Xaia, she stressed the need for thorough evaluation to ensure safety and efficacy. Rushing to market without proper scrutiny could pose risks, particularly for patients with serious mental illnesses.

Looking forward, Bullock envisions virtual reality as a tool to enhance the delivery of evidence-based psychotherapy. VR has the potential to address gaps in treatment fidelity, minimize therapeutic errors, and expand access to care, especially for underserved populations. However, she pointed out the importance of rigorous testing and thoughtful implementation to maximize the benefits while mitigating risks.
