Many people sacrifice precious hours of sleep for a little extra "me" time, which is a phenomenon known as revenge bedtime procrastination or sleep procrastination.

Who is Prone to Revenge Bedtime Procrastination?

Research suggests that those who engage in sleep procrastination often struggle with procrastination in other areas of life, such as work or household chores. Studies also indicate that women, students, parents and shift workers are particularly susceptible to this behavior. It seems that anyone craving a few moments of personal time amidst their busy lives is at risk of falling into the trap of revenge bedtime procrastination.

The Difference From Sleep Deprivation

While revenge bedtime procrastination may feel harmless, it can lead to serious sleep deprivation if left unchecked. Sleep deprivation, characterized by a consistent lack of sleep, can have detrimental effects on both physical and mental health. From depression to heart disease, the consequences of sleep deprivation are far-reaching and severe.

What to Do About Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

If a person finds themself caught in the cycle of revenge bedtime procrastination, there are steps that they can take to improve their sleep habits.

Consistent Sleep Schedule

Establishing a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and practicing good sleep hygiene are all effective strategies for getting the rest a person needs.

No Electronic Devices Before Bed

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), simple changes like avoiding electronic devices before bed and exercising regularly can make a significant difference in a person's sleep quality.

Therapy

Additionally, cognitive behavioral therapy focused on improving sleep hygiene is beneficial for those struggling with insomnia.

So while it may be tempting to stay up late to indulge in some much-needed relaxation time, a person needs to prioritize sleep for their overall well-being. Recognizing the signs of revenge bedtime procrastination and implementing healthy sleep habits can ensure a thriving daily life.
