Is Exercising in the Evening Better for Obese People?

Obese people are advised to do physical activities but does it matter if they do exercises in the evening or the morning?

Evening Exercises for Obese

A groundbreaking study has shed light on the potential benefits of evening exercise for people grappling with obesity. Conducted over eight years and involving a substantial cohort, the research explored the impact of timing on physical activity and its association with health outcomes, particularly mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and microvascular disease (MVD).

Optimal Timing for Exercise

The study revealed that people who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) predominantly during the evening hours experienced the lowest risk of mortality, CVD and MVD. Compared to those who exercised at other times of the day, participants who prioritized evening MVPA demonstrated significantly reduced risks across these health indicators.

Importance of Evening Activity Frequency

Furthermore, the study emphasized the importance of regularity in evening MVPA. Those who consistently engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity during the evening exhibited the most substantial health benefits, suggesting that a consistent exercise routine during this time may be particularly advantageous for people with obesity.

Counterbalancing Glucose Intolerance

The findings also highlighted the potential of evening exercise to counterbalance glucose intolerance, especially prevalent among people with obesity or diabetes during late evening hours. By incorporating physical activity during this period, people may mitigate some of the adverse effects associated with glucose intolerance, thereby promoting better metabolic health.

Future Implications

Dr. Matthew Ahmadi, a postdoctoral research fellow, emphasized the significance of these findings in guiding future recommendations for obesity and type 2 diabetes management. He suggests that integrating physical activity into specific times of the day may represent a crucial strategy for mitigating health risks associated with these conditions.

The Promise of Wearable Technology

The study's utilization of wearable devices underscores the potential of technology in advancing research and healthcare practices. By capturing detailed physical activity patterns, wearable devices offer valuable insights into the relationship between the timing of exercise and health outcomes, facilitating personalized interventions for obesity management.
