Despite its inclusion in the United States Declaration of Independence as an unalienable right, achieving happiness remains challenging for many. Recent data from the World Happiness Report places the United States at 23rd, a drop from previous years. Additionally, a 2024 Gallup poll revealed that less than half of Americans are "very satisfied" with their personal lives. These statistics suggest that the pursuit of happiness is not straightforward, and many struggle to achieve it.
Genetic and Psychological Perspectives
Humans may not be naturally inclined towards happiness. Dr. Laurie Santos, a cognitive scientist at Yale University, highlights that natural selection prioritizes survival and reproduction over contentment. According to Dr. Santos, this evolutionary bias towards negativity keeps humans vigilant against potential threats, which can hinder feelings of happiness.
Dr. Santos' insights stem from her work as a psychology professor and host of "The Happiness Lab" podcast. Her course, "Psychology and the Good Life," is the most popular in Yale's history, indicating a widespread interest in understanding and achieving happiness.
Cultivating Happiness
If happiness is not a default state, can it be cultivated? Many experts believe it can. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon and CNN's chief medical correspondent, explores this question in his podcast, "Chasing Life." In its 10th season, Dr. Gupta discusses with experts the scientific foundations of happiness, including how to define, attain, maintain, and increase it.
The concept of rewiring the brain for happiness involves understanding and applying psychological and neurological principles. Techniques such as practicing gratitude, mindfulness, and positive social interactions are often recommended by experts. These practices can help shift focus from negativity to positive experiences, thereby enhancing overall happiness.
