Effective Ways to Beat Summer Depression
Summer depression, also known as summer-pattern seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects some people during the warmer months.
What is Summer Depression?
Summer depression, or reverse SAD, is a less common type of seasonal depression that occurs during the summer. Unlike the more prevalent winter-pattern SAD, which happens in the colder months, summer depression begins in late spring or early summer and tends to resolve by fall. Approximately 30% of people with seasonal depression experience it during the summer. Symptoms of summer depression can include anxiety, insomnia, lack of appetite, weight loss, agitation, and restlessness. Various factors such as biological, environmental, and psychological influences may contribute to this condition.
What To Do When Summer Depression Hits
Identify Triggers
Recognizing the specific factors that trigger summer depression is crucial. Whether it is the excessive heat, changes in routine, or increased daylight hours, understanding these triggers allows for better management of symptoms.
Ensure Quality Sleep
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule can significantly impact overall mood and well-being. Ensuring adequate, restful sleep helps regulate emotions and reduce the symptoms of summer depression. Creating a sleep-conducive environment and avoiding excessive light exposure in the evening are essential steps.
Stay Physically Active
Participating in consistent physical exercise can significantly reduce the symptoms of depression. Physical activity stimulates the release of endorphins, which act as natural enhancers of mood. Activities such as walking, swimming, or light jogging can be particularly beneficial during the summer months.
Limit Social Media Use
Taking breaks from social media can positively affect mental health. Overuse of social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Limiting time spent on social media platforms can help reduce these negative impacts and improve overall mood.
Practice Body Positivity
Body image issues can intensify during summer due to the need for lighter clothing and swimwear. Practicing body-positivity self-talk can help counteract negative feelings about one's appearance. Embracing and appreciating one's body as it is can significantly boost self-esteem and reduce depression symptoms.
