5 Spices That Can Help Reduce Pain
Natural remedies, such as essential oils, herbs, and alternative therapies, have been used for centuries to manage and relieve pain.
Cloves
Cloves, derived from the Eugenia caryophyllata plant, are traditionally used to alleviate toothache pain. A 2021 study found that clove oil was as effective as ice in reducing pain during dental procedures in children. It also outperformed lignocaine gel, a common local anesthetic. Researchers believe that cloves possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antiviral properties, which contribute to their pain-relieving effects.
Capsaicin

Although the American Migraine Foundation notes mixed results regarding feverfew's effectiveness, a 2023 study suggests it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective benefits. Turmeric
Turmeric contains curcumin, which has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2021 review indicated that curcumin's pain-relieving effects are comparable to Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, turmeric is recommended as a complementary treatment rather than a replacement for NSAIDs. Turmeric can be incorporated into the diet through curries, smoothies, or juices.
