A 66-year-old British man had the unfortunate fate of obtaining "serious brain injury" after chowing down a £4.99 sandwich, which has since been recalled due to possible contamination.

Last month, John Daniels bought the chicken and bacon Caesar wrap from Boots for his meal. However, things went awry quickly after he consumed the sandwich since he suffered severe diarrhea and even passed blood for two days, The Sun reported.

On May 19, the chartered surveyor was taken to a healthcare facility because his condition got worse. The following day, he was diagnosed with an E. coli infection, which he supposedly contracted from eating the recalled sandwich.

Things seemingly improved after his diagnosis since he was discharged from the hospital on May 22. However, he had to go back to the center when he started feeling dizzy and weak and even struggled to walk five days later.

Doctors then diagnosed him with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks part of the peripheral nervous system following an infection with a virus or bacteria, as per the World Health Organization.

Though people of all ages are at risk of contracting the condition, it is reportedly more common among adult males. Fortunately, most people fully recover from the disease, even those battling the severe form of the syndrome.

"I've never been that unwell before so I knew something was very wrong, but to be told I had E. coli and then Guillain-Barre Syndrome was a huge shock," John was quoted as saying by the outlet. "My condition went from bad to worse as I developed complication after complication.

"I'm still not right physically, and I don't know if I ever will be, and to hear how many others have been affected is deeply upsetting. I just hope that something is done to stop it happening to anyone else."

Just a few weeks after he was diagnosed, John lost weight while being monitored by medical teams. With the help of his lawyers, he's already asking for. a probe into what happened amid the possible E. coli outbreak.

In the wake of the issue, at least 60 types of pre-packed sandwiches, wraps, and salads were recalled. Thus far, around 211 people are confirmed to have contracted E. coli amid the outbreak. Of the figure, only 67 required hospital treatment.

Sarita Sharma, a specialist public health lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: "What John has suffered over the past few weeks is very concerning, and he's understandably upset and distressed at what he's been through as a result of the E. coli infection.

"To hear that more than 200 people have also been affected is truly shocking. E. coli is a bacteria that can cause foodborne illness, leading to gastric symptoms, and in some cases, such as John's, it can lead to other serious health conditions.
