Oral CBD has been gaining attention as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders, but is it safe and effective?

About Oral CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant that is often used for its potential therapeutic effects, including anxiety reduction. Oral CBD refers to CBD products that are ingested, such as capsules, oils, or edibles. Unlike THC, CBD lacks psychoactive properties, which makes it a preferred choice for individuals looking to alleviate anxiety without experiencing cognitive alterations.

Treating Anxiety Disorders with Oral CBD

Recent clinical trials have shown promising results regarding the safety and efficacy of oral CBD for anxiety disorders. In a study published in the Asian Journal of Psychiatry, an international team of researchers evaluated the effects of a 150mg/mL CBD oral solution compared to a placebo in 178 participants suffering from mild to moderate anxiety. The participants took either CBD or a placebo for 15 weeks.

The findings demonstrated that the CBD oral solution was not only effective in reducing anxiety symptoms but also showed excellent safety and tolerability. Participants who took CBD experienced significant improvements in their anxiety levels, depression, and sleep quality. Importantly, there were no serious adverse events reported, and no incidences of withdrawal anxiety were observed upon tapering the dose at the end of the treatment.

The results of this study highlight CBD's promise as a therapeutic option for a range of psychiatric conditions. According to the researchers, the CBD oral solution outperformed the placebo in achieving primary and secondary objectives. These objectives included reductions in scores on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), as well as improvements in sleep quality and overall clinical impressions.

The safety profile of oral CBD was further validated, as the participants did not experience significant side effects. This aligns with findings from other studies, suggesting that CBD can be a viable treatment option for anxiety without the risks associated with traditional anxiolytic medications.
