Fast food giant Burger King introduced a fewer-calorie and lower-fat French fry to its US patrons on Tuesday. The company named it “Satisfries”.

The new fry has not replaced the old classic, instead is being sold alongside. It has one third the fat and 20 percent fewer calories. The original order contains 340 calories compared to 240 calories in smaller size.

“We know our guests are hungry for options that are better for them, but don’t want to compromise on taste,” said Alex Macedo, president of Burger King North America.

The secret behind the production of Satisfry according to the company is, reduction in the potato’s oil absorption while keeping the product “crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.”

If statistics are to be believed, around 56 million orders are placed for fries each month at Burger King.

Burger King’s Satisfry has 40 percent less fat than McDonald’s fries. McDonald’s fries serve 11.2 grams fats compared to 6.3 grams in Burger King’s 70-gram serving.

Satisfry also have 30 percent fewer calories with 150.5 calories compared to 226.8 calories in McDonald’s 70-gram serving.

“When it comes to what we eat, we know that small changes can have a big impact,” Macedo said.

Although everyone is not convinced.

“You don’t want people to fool themselves and actually increase the serving size because they think it’s healthier,” dietician Mitzi Dulan told the newspaper USA Today.

“French fries are an easy way to get a lot of calories and a lot of fat,” she later added.

In United States alone, 33 percent of the total population is obese. The reason for such condition is fast-food industry itself.

Burger King is the world’s third-largest fast food enterprise in the world.
