Chinese Man Grows New Nose on Forehead after First One Becomes Infected [PHOTO & VIDEO]
After suffering a car accident in 2012 which resulted in the loss of his nose, a Chinese man has undergone a procedure which involves growing a new nose on his forehead which will later be transplanted into its correct spot.
The Chinese man, who has not been identified, comes from Fuzhou City, east China's Fujian Province. According to Reuters who picked up the report from local media, the 22-year-old man nicknamed "Xiaolian" underwent surgery for his new nose. Doctors took cartilage from Xiaolian's ribs and implanted it under skin tissue on his forehead.
Once the nose on his forehead has fully grown, it will be transplanted to its proper place later this month. All in all, it has taken almost 9 months to reach full maturity.
The lead plastic surgeon, Guo Zhihui, from Xiehe Hospital, said that the transplant would happen soon and that Xiaolian could lead a normal life afterward.
The man was involved in a traffic car accident in August 2012 which damaged his nose, according to the report. Xiaolian failed to treat the injuries which resulted in an infection that ultimately corroded his cartilage. Surgeons were unable to repair it, which then began the process of growing a new nose on his forehead.
However, this is not the first time a nose transplant of this kind will take place. Last year, a British man who lost his nose to cancer had a replacement grown on one of his arms. His doctors said his appearance and sense of smell should be as they were before the transplant.
