A child who was about to celebrate his second birthday died after swallowing a tiny battery in Las Vegas.

Julian Wilson was only a year old when he ingested a small battery at his family home and passed away on October 18, reported Daily Mail. This caused internal bleeding and lacerations to his esophagus.

Just after the incident, the kid was rushed to the hospital in Las Vegas where the little boy began vomiting blood. Momentarily doctors could not figure out what was wrong with the child.

“They didn’t know what it was in the X-ray. They didn’t figure out it was a battery until they did the autopsy,” said Julian’s grandmother Elena Derbyshire to Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Later, the Clark County coroner declared the death an accident and reported that Julian died from internal bleeding with lacerations in his esophagus, gastric irritation and a collapsed lung.

However the investigations by Las Vegas police and the Clark County Department of Family Services are being continued.

Julian’s grandmother also said that the incident was a tragedy and they were not hiding anything.

If statistics are to be believed each year in U.S alone around 2,800 kids need hospital treatment after swallowing the tiny batteries. Also according to safekids.org, the number of serious injuries and deaths as a result of button batteries has increased ninefold compared to last decade.

It is advisable to lock away those loose batteries lying around or duct tape over the devices which require battery to operate.
