Lower Education Tied to Unhealthy Diets
People with lower educations levels tend to eat more junk food, according to a new study.
A new study reveals that less-educated people may eat more unhealthy, calorically dense food than those with higher educations levels because they are more physically active.
Previous studies consistently link lower socioeconomic status to unhealthy diets. However, physical activity may also be related to socioeconomic status and dietary habits.
Researchers in the latest study used a large-scale survey approach to investigate the relationship between education level, food consumption, and physical activity. Researchers analyzed a large database from a representative German adult population and found that German adults with a low level of education ate more sugary and fatty foods compared to adults with a higher education level. T hese adults also ate fewer fruits and vegetables.
After analyzing how physically active participants were, researchers found that adults of lower socioeconomic status were more physically active and expended more energy than those of higher socioeconomic status. Researchers said the latest findings suggest that higher energy expenditure may explain higher consumption of sugar- and fat-rich foods in people with lower socioeconomic status.
The findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.
