An Indian-origin mechanical engineer, Anjan Contractor has developed a 3D printer that makes pizza fit for astronauts.

Engineer Contractor made headlines last year after winning a 125,000-dollar-grant for building a prototype 3D printer. The goal was to build a prototype of a 3-D food printer that can make pizza.

According to Contractor, the printer would be able to lay out all the starches, proteins, fats, texture and structure, spraying on flavor, smell and even micronutrients at the end.

Contractor also released a video displaying his prototype in action. It took total of 70 seconds to cook the pizza after the 3-D printer finished things on its part.

In the video the 3D printer took food "building blocks" to make the crust, cheese, and so-called "protein layer" for the dish.

Last year, NASA had offered $125,000 to Systems & Materials Research Corporation, where Contractor worker to complete the food printer. The food printers was expected to provide astronauts a nutritious, comforting alternative to the canned and freeze-dried prepackaged foods they're currently stuck with.

Contractor had also said the cartridges of the printer would last for 30 years, according to India Today.
