Potassium, Sodium Linked to Quicker Deterioration in Kidney Patients

By Christine Hsu | Update Date: Sep 17, 2015 06:16 PM EDT

Kidney patients should stay away from foods with high sodium and potassium content, a new study suggests.

Researchers from (Tulane University found that having a high dietary intake of sodium and potassium may accelerate the progression of kidney disease.

The latest study involved urine samples from patients with chronic kidney disease. Researchers linked higher urinary excretion of potassium and sodium to significantly faster disease progression.

"These data warrant future clinical trials to test the effect of a moderate reduction in dietary sodium and potassium intake on CKD progression in patients with high dietary sodium or potassium intake," said Dr. He. "The findings could ultimately impact dietary recommendations for patients with CKD to slow disease progression."

The findings are published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).
