San Francisco has been leading by example when it comes to treatment for a deadly disease that we know as AIDS. There was a time when San Francisco became the hub for HIV infections. However, the city decided to take the bull by the horns and now only reports a few hundred cases each year. Thanks to the creative programs launched by the city that the problem is largely under control. Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said "I love the San Francisco model. If it keeps doing what it is doing, I have a strong feeling that they will be successful at ending the epidemic as we know it. Not every last case - we'll never get there - but the overall epidemic. And then there's no excuse for everyone not doing it", reported NY Times.

World Health Organization has issued new standards for the prevention of HIV and also its treatment. They are also advising the world to follow the same model as followed by San Francisco to curb the disease. According to the model, every person infected with the virus must be immediately put on antiretroviral drug rather than waiting for the strength of immunity systems to plummet. The practice of "test and treat" was first followed by San Francisco 5 years ago and the again in 2013. Following the practice, the results have been phenomenal in controlling the rise of infection, says San Francisco Bay Times.

Since the implementation of the model, only a handful of hundred cases have been reported against thousands of deaths that were reported in early 1990s. There are also other measures that have been undertaken by the city that offer immediate appointment with the doctors for patients that have been newly diagnosed with the infection, reports American Pharmacists Association.
