Sex Talks With Mom Can Promtoe Safe Sex: Study
Teen talk about sex with mommy can bolster safe sex practises, a new study found.
According to NY Daily News, researchers at North Carolina State University analyzed past studies to show that discussions about sex with parents helped teens. The researchers found that communication with fathers did not yield any benefits.
"Parent-adolescent sexual communication has received considerable attention as a factor that can positively affect safer sex behavior among youth," researchers wrote in JAMA Pediatrics.
Mic reports that researchers identified the association between parent-teen communication and safe sex by analyzing 52 studies published in the last 30 years.
Concerns that sex education could lead to increased sex exposure often makes discussions about the subject taboo in homes. Studies have however shown in the past that sex education does not cause early onset of sex-related behaviors.
The study from NCSU also assumes significance given that schools do not impart adequate sex education and the high rates of STIs, pregnancies among teens.
"Sexual communication with parents, particularly mothers, plays a small protective role in safer sex behavior among adolescents; this protective effect is more pronounced for girls than boys," researchers wrote.
