'UFO Clouds' Spotted In Coasts Of California And Cape Town

There were thousands of "mysterious sightings" on the sky on Saturday evening. An unarmed missile test fire on the California coast was followed by the sights in the sky, and then similar sightings in Cape Town, South Africa, whose residents captured images of clouds that looked like UFOs.

However, Daniel Peck, an ABC meteorologist, put a spoke in the rising excitement, when he gave a simple explanation. They are technically called lenticular clouds, he said.

"They are pretty common and pretty cool to look at," said Peck.

He also described their formations. He said they are usually created near mountain ranges, around which the air flows and hits, and then goes up, forming once they cross the peaks of the mountains.

They had also been seen near Texas earlier this year, according to ABC News.

The social media shared a number of photographs of the clouds.

"Right now above my head! The strangest most amazing UFO shaped clouds," wrote Instagram user Arthur Albert.

Twitter user Monique Jackson said: "Weird UFO clouds over Cape Town.'

Meteorologist "Mr Van Dam' wrote on Facebook: "They form when conditions are just right. Air flows along the surface of the earth and reaches some sort of obstruction like a mountain or valley."

Following the Nov 8 sightings, a number of citizens ran out into the streets in order to stare at the spectacle.

The missile test was undertaken by the U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs. It was  a Trident II missile from a submarine near the coastline of Southern California, which amazed the residents when it sailed into the dark skies on Saturday, according to News Max
