Bad News for Meat Lovers, Says Study
As the news of bacon being carcinogens and that the hot dogs contain human DNA, the new study reveals even more bad news. If you enjoy eating grilled meat a lot, then you would be exposed to a higher risk of kidney cancer. What is worse, it is not just the grilled red meat that raises the alarm, even grilled chicken increases the health risk says NBC News.
According to the Washington Post, it is not just grilling but also pan frying that can have poor effects on your health. Researchers at the University of Texas studied 659 patients who were recently diagnosed with Kidney cancer to 699 people with similar yet cancer free bodies. American Cancer Society said in a statement, "Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women. For reasons that are not totally clear, the rate of new kidney cancers has been rising since the 1990s, although this seems to have leveled off in the past few years". ACS says that it is possible that new imaging tests are able to detect more cancer cases, the researchers even believe that consuming too much meat may also be the reason. They said in a statement, "The American/Western dietary pattern consists largely of red and processed meats, and the results of the current study suggest that the association between this dietary pattern and cancer may be in part explained by exposure to meat cooking mutagens".
The study revealed that people with two genetic mutations were at an increased risk of getting cancer from grilled meat. The expert notes of the study said, "Once we have identified more genes we will likely be able to identify a subset of the population that is at particularly high risk to develop kidney cancer if they eat meat and processed meat." According to Reuters, the people who enjoy chicken or meat cooked on an open flame must avoid charring it.
