Pluto’s Psychedelic Side Revealed by Colorful NASA Images

Beautiful rainbow hues of the dwarf planet, Pluto, were revealed by NASA using the false color image. The technique used by the New Horizons Scientists called the Principal Component Analysis highlights many subtle color changes across various regions on Pluto. The icy planetoid showed a very different image of itself since the New Horizons Spacecraft zipped past the planet in summers. The images that they received were fascinating that made the dwarf planet look psychedelic. First set of images revealed the heart of Pluto and then later they were treated to the "snakeskin" texture of the planet with its distinct surface features. However, this week's release was a colorful display of the planet in all its different hues, reports Huffington Post.

As reported by NBC News, the scientists said, "Think of it like turning the contrast way up, but scientifically." The statistical technique that NASA used to capture this image worked wonders in highlighting different regions of the planet with various colors that may otherwise not be visible to the naked eye. This image was taken at over 22,000 miles away on July 14th by the New Horizons probe, which has now made its way to the Kuiper belt.

The probe that was responsible for getting the wonder shot has now delved even deeper into the Kuiper belt but it still sends data about the planetoid to the scientists working on the earth. As reported by Reuters, it will take, "take about 16 months for [the craft] to transmit back all the thousands of images and measurements taken during its pass by Pluto." These breathtaking images that we see today took New Horizons a whole nine years to reach the dwarf planet, says RT.
